Elephants Bathing, Elephant Orphanage, Pinnawela, Sri Lanka
A batik painting of elephants bathing in the river at the Elephant Orphanage in Pinnawela, near Kandy, Sri Lanka.
In 2000, I accompanied the Cumnor House School 1st XI cricket team on their tour of Sri Lanka. During the month we were there, we visited the Elephant Orphanage at Pinnawela. Every day the elephants walked through the village down to the river to have a bathe. The elephant keepers made sure each elephant got wet and had a good clean.
The Elephant Orphanage is an amazing place to visit. The larger elephants are allowed to wander within the acreage, whilst the baby elephants are fed and taken care of.
