Memories of Cumnor House School 1969 - 2000'

In 2000, I was commissioned to create a huge batik painting showing life at Cumnor House School, Sussex, UK during the years Nick Milner-Gulland was headmaster, 1969 - 2000.

The batik includes scenes of school life: the school orchestra trip; the Art Room with Mrs. Mussell's old red and white Citroen 2CV in the car park; the children's gardens; children sketching bluebells in Kiln Wood; the Shakespeare play with a scene from Midsummer Night's Dream; the Old Oak Tree, pre-1987 Hurricane and the aftermath; the ropes over the Old Swimming Pool; Leo Wynne, the then Bursar, announcing the results on Sports' Day; the main school building and a cricket match in front; Nick MG conducting the school orchestra with some well-known faces of staff and children, including Nicola Beddy and Martin Godber (horns); the Barn and Hal and Nan Milner-Gulland (ex-Headmaster and wife of Cumnor) standing nearby; the Tulip tree; Nick and Anna Milner-Gulland; and 'Under the clock' - an old punishment that many miscreants had to suffer.

The batik painting is now hung above the fireplace in the front hall of the Main building at Cumnor House School. It is the largest batik painting I have so far done 1.5m x 1 metre. It took me at least a year to finish.
