In 1997, I was invited to exhibit in Guiyang, Guizhou, SW. China. It was the time of the Harvest festival. I stayed overnight in a little village near Kaili. It was wonderful to experience the dancing and music that the villagers performed to celebrate the festival.

I stayed a night in a family's house and was woken up at 3 am, by firecrackers exploding outside my window. Kids were going round the village setting off these firecrackers. As I looked out of the window, I was inspired by the beautiful sight of the mist rising above the rooftops.

I did this batik on Japanese paper and left some of the wax to make the the ridges of the roofs more 3D.
